Poker is a family of card games involving betting and individualistic play whereby the winner is determined by the ranks and combinations of their cards, some of which remain hidden until the end of the game. Poker games vary in the number of cards dealt, the number of shared or ?community? cards and the number of cards that remain hidden. The betting procedures vary among different poker games in such ways as betting limits and splitting the pot between a high hand and a low hand. The most popular form of poker is Texas Hold?em.
In most modern poker games, the first round of betting begins with some form of forced bet by one of the players. In standard poker, each player is betting that the hand he has will be the highest ranked. The action then proceeds clockwise around the table and each player in turn must either match the maximum previous bet or fold, losing the amount bet so far and all further interest in the hand. A player who matches a bet may also ?raise,? or increase the bet. The betting round ends when all players have either matched the last bet or folded. If all but one player fold on any round, then the remaining player collects the pot and may choose to show or conceal their hand. If more than one player remains in contention after the final betting round, the hands are revealed and the player with the winning hand takes the pot. With the exception of initial forced bets, money is only placed into the pot voluntarily by a player who, at least in theory, rationally believes the bet has positive expected value. Thus, while the outcome of any particular hand significantly involves chance, the long-run expectations of the players are determined by their actions chosen on the basis of probability, psychology and game theory.
Poker has gained in popularity since the beginning of the twentieth century, and has gone from being primarily a recreational activity confined to small groups of mostly male enthusiasts, to a widely popular spectator activity with international audiences and multi-million dollar tournament prizes, with women being a constantly growing part of that audience.
History
English actor Joseph Crowell reported that the game was played in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1829, with a deck of 20 cards, and four players betting on which player?s hand was the most valuable. Jonathan H. Green?s book, An Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling (G. B. Zieber, Philadelphia, 1843), described the spread of the game from there to the rest of the country by Mississippi riverboats, on which gambling was a common pastime. As it spread north along the Mississippi River and to the West during the gold rush, it is thought to have become a part of the frontier pioneer ethos.
Soon after this spread, the full 52-card English deck was used and the flush was introduced. The draw was added prior to 1850 (when it was first mentioned in print in a handbook of games). During the American Civil War, many additions were made including stud poker (specifically five-card stud), and the straight. Further American developments followed, such as the wild card (around 1875), lowball and split-pot poker (around 1900), and community card poker games (around 1925).
Modern tournament play became popular in American casinos after the World Series of Poker began, in 1970. Notable champions from these early WSOP tournaments include Johnny Moss, Amarillo Slim, Bobby Baldwin, Doyle Brunson, and Puggy Pearson. Later in the 1970s, the first serious poker strategy books appeared, notably Super/System by Doyle Brunson (ISBN 1-58042-081-8) and Caro?s Book of Poker Tells by Mike Caro (ISBN 0-89746-100-2), followed later by The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky (ISBN 1-880685-00-0). By the 1980s, poker was being depicted in popular culture as a commonplace recreational activity. For example, it was featured in at least 10 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation as a weekly event of the senior staff of the fictional ship?s crew. In the 1990s, poker and casino gambling spread across the United States, most notably to Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Poker?s popularity experienced an unprecedented spike at the beginning of the 21st century, largely because of the introduction of online poker and hole-card cameras, which turned the game into a spectator sport. Not only could viewers now follow the action and drama of the game on television, they could also play the game in the comfort of their own home.
Following the surge in popularity, new poker tours soon emerged, notably the World Poker Tour and European Poker Tour, both televised and the latter sponsored by online poker company PokerStars. Subsequent tours have since been created by PokerStars, such as Latin American Poker Tour and Asia Pacific Poker Tour, as well as other national tours.
In 2009 the International Federation of Poker was founded in Lausanne, Switzerland, becoming the official governing body for poker and promoting the game as a Mind Sport. Gameplay

At the end of each round, all bets are gathered into the central pot.
At any time during a betting round, if one player bets and no opponents choose to call (match) the bet and all opponents instead fold, the hand ends immediately, the bettor is awarded the pot, no cards are required to be shown, and the next hand begins. This is what makes bluffing possible. Bluffing is a primary feature of poker, one that distinguishes it from other vying games and from other games that make use of poker hand rankings.
At the end of the last betting round, if more than one player remains, there is a showdown, in which the players reveal their previously hidden cards and evaluate their hands. The player with the best hand according to the poker variant being played wins the pot. A poker hand comprises five cards; in variants where a player has more than five cards, the best five cards play.
Variants
Poker has many variations, all following a similar pattern of play and generally using the same hand ranking hierarchy. There are four main families of variants, largely grouped by the protocol of card-dealing and betting:
Straight
A complete hand is dealt to each player, and players bet in one round, with raising and re-raising allowed. This is the oldest poker family; the root of the game as now played was a game known as Primero, which evolved into the game three-card brag, a very popular gentleman?s game around the time of the American Revolutionary War and still enjoyed in the U.K. today. Straight hands of five cards are sometimes used as a final showdown, but poker is almost always played in a more complex form to allow for additional strategy.
Stud poker

Hrreos, a type of Galician dry-store structure, with slotted floors regulate temperature better in sunny weather conditions, which helps preserve the corn stored there. This is something that people from ancient times knew, and has been ignored in recent restorations, that is proven now with a mathematical model developed in the University of Vigo (Spain).
In many restorations of old hrreo dry-store structures in recent years, slots that perforated the floor were removed. This was not a good idea, according to a study that researchers from the University of Vigo have just published in the Energy and Buildings journal.
The slots not only ventilate the inside, where the corn and other food is kept, but they also reduce the temperature when the sun shines. Scientists have confirmed this by placing "thermohygometric" sensors in the hrreo and entering the records into a mathematical model. Fluid mechanic equations have served as a reference.
"Although on principle one could think that the heat is good for drying the corncobs, if the temperature raises a lot, the corn's hygrometric balance curve changes and it begins to absorb moisture from the environment. This helps the proliferation of bacteria which makes the corn rot" said Csar Sa, researcher at the University of Vigo and lead author of the study.
The researcher highlights that "the main advantage of having a slotted floor in hrreo dry-store structures is that it clearly shows better results in two parameters: the efficiency in ventilation and preventing internal temperatures from rising."
There is scientific evidence supporting the traditional custom of opening the access doors of the dry-store structure (normally there are two, one at the front and one on the side) to improve ventilation when the solar radiation is high during the September to May storage period.
Throughout these nine months the team analysed the hrreo's response to climate, which has been the basis for this first published study. Further studies will be subsequently published. As a model, a "Pontevedra style" structure was used, made of stone and wood, which is different from the "Corua style" which is just made of stone.
Mathematical simulations and flow patterns
In order to carry out the mathematical operations, a simulation software was used and created a calculation net of eight million elements. Air flow patterns were obtained, which are fundamental to understanding the ventilation of the dry-store structure in different climate action situations.
The graphics of the vertical transversal and longitudinal sections of the dry-store structure show a large upward flow towards the middle of the building through the slots in the floor. The emissions escape en masse through the top row, and to a smaller scale through the first line of the side slots.
The whole study was carried out in a dry-store structure with no corn. "In this situation, the flow patterns can differ from ones with a stocked hrreo (due to the interference from the corncobs) but we believe the conclusions regarding the efficiency of ventilation and temperature contention do not vary much" Sa highlights.
The food is preserved in these buildings using only the energy provided by the atmosphere. "From this point of view, the hrreo dry-store structures are very efficient, and maintenance of them is virtually unnecessary over the years" the researcher concludes.

How payroll tax gridlock in Congress finally came unstuck
A deal to prolong the payroll tax cut has also paved the way for Congress to extend long-term unemployment benefits and the Medicare 'doc fix' to the end of the year.?
A surprise shift by House Republicans to extend a payroll tax cut ? without requiring offsetting spending cuts ? broke an impasse over two other measures now set for votes in the House and Senate on Friday.
Skip to next paragraphIf Congress passes and the president signs this package into law, as expected:
- Americans will no longer see a 2 percent hike in payroll taxes.
- Doctors serving Medicare patients will no longer face a 27 percent drop in reimbursement.
- Long-term jobless workers won?t immediately lose their extended benefits.
All the provisions were set to expire on Feb. 29. In a bid to pay for these features, the unemployed will be eligible for fewer weeks of benefits, beginning in June. Some will face new requirements, such as drug testing, to access them. And new federal hires will be required to pay more for their pensions than current federal workers.?
Until Monday, House Republicans had demanded offsets for the $100 billion cost of extending the 2 percent cut in the Social Security payroll tax, from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent. They said that the payroll tax holiday was not, in fact, a tax cut, because it relied on taxpayer dollars to make up for the uncollected revenues in the Social Security trust fund.
But in the end, the political pressure on House GOP leaders to avoid what would seem to be a tax hike was simply too high.
?The agreement that?s been reached to stop a tax hike on middle class Americans is a fair agreement and one that I support,? said Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio, in a briefing with reporters on Thursday.
?But let?s be honest,? he added. ?This is an economic-relief package, not a bill that?s going to grow the economy and create jobs.?
Some Democrats agree that the tax cuts should have been offset by revenues. They want the Bush tax cuts, which expire Dec. 31, to be offset and see a bad precedent in the current deal.?
?By taking this action, we?re saying that tax cuts somehow don?t have to be paid for,? said Sen. Mark Warner (D) of Virginia in a floor speech on Thursday.??We?re advancing a policy that I believe will come back to haunt us later this year when the Bush tax cuts expire.?
Other Democrats?are mounting an 11th-hour protest against extending the Social Security payroll tax cut, saying it undermines Social Security.?The deal mandates that revenue not collected by the Social Security Trust Fund through the payroll tax be replaced out of taxpayer dollars in the US Treasury's General Fund.?
