ScienceDaily (Apr. 3, 2012) ? New research from the University of Adelaide could help protect one of the world's most globally threatened tree species -- the big leaf mahogany -- from extinction.
Big leaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) is the most prized mahogany timber around the world. It is at risk of extinction in its native habitats because of the timber trade, particularly in Central and South America.
To better understand how such a threatened species can be brought back from the brink of extinction, scientists from the University of Adelaide's Environment Institute have studied the important role played by the trees' pollen in the health and re-growth of mahogany forests.
The results of this study have been published online in Ecology Letters.
The researchers found that the extensive exploitation of mahogany forests has had a major impact on the diversity and availability of the trees' pollen. This in turn limits the ability of individual trees to grow and provide cross-fertilization for other mahogany trees.
"We collected data across seven Central American countries* which shows that trees remaining in cleared forest areas suffer from too much self-fertilization and low pollen diversity," says lead author Martin Breed, a PhD student with the University of Adelaide's Environment Institute and the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences.
"This results in less competitive seedlings and affects the rate of re-growth of the species."
Mr Breed says to restore forests would require replanting key species and finding good-quality seeds from healthy trees. "Growing new mahogany trees has proven a major challenge in the past. By better understanding the importance of pollen diversity, we hope this research provides the key to restoring forests at a much higher rate.
"Ensuring seed is collected from healthy populations will improve our chances of protecting not only mahogany, but the hundreds of other species -- and human communities -- that rely on it," he says.
Senior co-author Professor Andrew Lowe, Director of the Australian Centre for Evolutionary Biology and Biodiversity at the University of Adelaide, says: "Aside from being one of the world's most prized timbers, every mahogany tree provides habitat for hundreds of animals and plants, so they're ecologically very important."
He says this discovery has the potential to impact the way we think about restoring forests and shows us why it is vital to protect areas of high conservation value.
"Preserving areas where large populations of species have existed for the longest time not only assures the future of these iconic sites, but also provides insurance for entire species beyond the sites themselves," Professor Lowe says.
The project was largely funded from the European Union through the project SEEDSOURCE, with a portion of the funding coming from a grant awarded by the Australian Research Council.
Dr Carlos Navarro, who was employed by CATIE (the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) in Costa Rica at the time, was primarily responsible for directing the fieldwork and the collection of leaf and seed material used in the analysis and was the researcher who did the growth assessments.

One of my goals for this spring break was to take my laptop to a coffee shop and write.? Just about every time I enter into a coffee shop, I see people with laptops.? Clearly, there is a portion of the population who find them productive places to work, and I wanted to see if it worked for me, if pushing myself out of my quiet writing comfort zone worked or if I found it horribly distracting.
When I told my husband my plan, he responded by telling me about his good friend who works in coffee shops just so he can check out all the good looking moms who go in during the work day to meet with their friends though my devoted hubby swears he?s never carted his laptop into Starbucks to work.? Hmmmm.
My concerns with writing in a public place were that I?d see people that I know since I live and teach in a small town.? I worried that I?d spend my entire allotted writing time catching up with someone.? I was also concerned that it might be too noisy or that I?d spend my entire time watching everyone else since I am an avid people watcher.? My last concern was that I?d feel self-conscious and silly trying to write in public and that would squash my creativity.
I hoped that the change in venue would jumpstart the writing goals I had set for this week off of work, so Saturday afternoon, I packed up my clipboard filled with paper, my favorite writing pen, my favorite writing book for when I?m stuck, and my laptop.? I wanted all bases covered.? I chose a smaller shop for my experiment, and I went all the way to town, forgoing the small shop in my community, in which I was sure to see friends or students.
When I first walked in, I knew the first person I saw, the cashier.? Uh oh. She greeted me by name and began to chat, so I decided to sit on a couch out of sight of the front counter though knowing her did come in handy when she called out, ?Amy, these your keys on the counter?? They were.
I ensconced myself in the rear corner of the shop on a comfy couch, and I didn?t feel self-conscious at all.? I began by writing by hand which I often do, but quickly switched to my laptop.? The words flowed. A few people came in and out of the shop, but it was relatively quiet other than the employees chatting.? I ended up writing over 1800 words and liking what I wrote. For me, this is a successful writing session.
I?m not sure that writing in a public place is something I would want to do every day or even every month, but to jumpstart my writing, it worked.
Apparently, my muses like the occasional latte too.? They definitely came to visit.

New cases of colonic cancer were expected to reach 107,000 in 1994 and to cause over 49,000 deaths. The incidence and mortality figures for rectal cancer were 42,000 and 7,000, respectively. The mortality rates for colonic cancer may be somewhat overestimated and those for rectal cancer underestimated because some death certificates state ?colon cancer? when the listed hospital diagnosis was cancer of the rectum or rectosigmoid.
Colorectal cancer increases with age and has increased significantly in white males, black males, and black females between 1973 and 1989. Since 1985, however, there have been declines for white males and females as well as a small decline for black females. Moreover, mortality rates have declined for white males and females and for black females but increased for black males in the 1985 to 1989 reporting period. This is most likely due to earlier diagnosis, since more than one-third of colorectal cancer patients are now diagnosed while the cancer is still localized. Five-year survival rates are about 90% when the cancer is detected while still localized; they fall of rapidly with spread of the disease. Survival rates for patients with distant metastases are less than 7%.
A number of predisposing factors have been identified for colorectal cancer. These include familial adenomatous polyposis, chronic ulcerative colitis, and the ?cancer family syndrome.? There is also a correlation with high-fat, low-fiber diets, although the cause-effect relationship between diet and colorectal cancer is not clearly understood.
Familial polyposis is all inherited autosomal dominant trait that leads to the production of multiple adenomatous polyps in the colon. These polyps have a tendency to undergo malignant transformation by age 30. In familial polyposis, all associated gene mutation has been identified. In one study, mutations of the affected gene, called APC, were found in the earliest tumors that were analyzed, including adenomas 0.5 cm in diameter, and the frequency of mutations remained constant as benign adenomas progressed to adenocarcinomas. These data indicate that mutations of the APC gene, thought to he a tumor suppressor gene, play a major role in initiation of colonic cancer. Other genetic changes such as mutations to the ras oncogene and in the p53 tumor suppressor gene occur later in tumor progression than alteration of the APC gene.
Treatment of colonic cancer may he by surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of treatment modalities, depending on the stage and location of the tumor. Surgery with or without radiation therapy is the most effective treatment, but survival is closely correlated with early detection of localized disease. Chemotherapy by itself is minimally effective in this disease, but combinations of 5-f1uorouracil (5-FU) and immune system stimulators such as levamisole or 5-FU plus leucovorin have shown some promise. The mechanism of action and side effects of leucovorin are high-yield subjects you should know for USMLE Step 1.

The courtyard dining in Piatto is like something straight out of Italy. It?s open yet covered (good when sandstorms kick in). The sunlight is bountiful and the atmosphere is light and airy. The trickle of water from the fountain, the melodic beats of utensils, and the chatter from nearby tables create an ambiance that is not normally found in Riyadh?s restaurants.
Normally, a vision of mushroom and tomato-topped bruschetta with green salad on my table might put me off. But Piatto?s bruschetta and salad are visions of freshness; crisp, delicate, and topped with luscious cheese and tomatoes. Equaly good was the salmon pasta;? al dente farfalle swathed in a pinkish-orange sauce ? simply beautiful. As for my dining companions, they enjoyed their chicken drizzled with lemon and grilled salmon mains.
As for Dessert , this was fast and light. A visit to Piatto is not complete if you skip their Gelato, a creamy but very light Italian ice cream. Add creme brulee and tiramisu and you?ll have three pieces of heaven; all in one platter, a tidal wave of sweetness and decadence.
By the time we left Piatto after our hearty lunch, a line has already formed in the waiting area. At such times finding a parking space can be tricky, so arrive early. Although there are cushioned booths in the family section, I can?t recommend dining in the courtyard enough. Prices are a little higher than your usual Italian restaurant, but it?s definitely worth it. I?ll try their pizza next time!
