Ancient red dye powers new 'green' battery: Chemists use plant extract in eco-friendly, sustainable lithium-ion battery

Dec. 11, 2012 ? Rose madder -- a natural plant dye once prized throughout the Old World to make fiery red textiles -- has found a second life as the basis for a new "green" battery.

Chemists from The City College of New York teamed with researchers from Rice University and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory to develop a non-toxic and sustainable lithium-ion battery powered by purpurin, a dye extracted from the roots of the madder plant (Rubia species).

More than 3,500 years ago, civilizations in Asia and the Middle East first boiled madder roots to color fabrics in vivid oranges, reds and pinks. In its latest technological incarnation, the climbing herb could lay the foundation for an eco-friendly alternative to traditional lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. These batteries charge everything from your mobile phone to electric vehicles, but carry with them risks to the environment during production, recycling and disposal.

"Purpurin," on the other hand, said team member and City College Professor of Chemistry George John, "comes from nature and it will go back to nature." The team reports their results in the journal Nature's online and open access publication, Scientific Reports, on December 11, 2012.

Most Li-ion batteries today rely on finite supplies of mined metal ores, such as cobalt. "Thirty percent of globally produced cobalt is fed into battery technology," noted Dr. Leela Reddy, lead author and a research scientist in Professor Pulickel Ajayan's lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Rice University. The cobalt salt and lithium are combined at high temperatures to make a battery's cathode, the electrode through which the electric current flows.

Mining cobalt metal and transforming it, however, is expensive, Dr. Reddy explained. Fabricating and recycling standard Li-ion batteries demands high temperatures, guzzling costly energy, especially during recycling. "In 2010, almost 10 billion lithium-ion batteries had to be recycled," he said .

Production and recycling also pumps an estimated 72 kilograms of carbon dioxide -- a greenhouse gas -- into the atmosphere for every kilowatt-hour of energy in a Li-ion battery, he noted. These grim facts have fed a surging demand to develop green batteries, said Dr. Reddy.

Fortunately, biologically based color molecules, like purpurin and its relatives, seem pre-adapted to act as a battery's electrode. In the case of purpurin, the molecule's six-membered (aromatic) rings are festooned with carbonyl and hydroxyl groups adept at passing electrons back and forth, just as traditional electrodes do. "These aromatic systems are electron-rich molecules that easily coordinate with lithium," explained Professor John.

Moreover, growing madder or other biomass crops to make batteries would soak up carbon dioxide and eliminate the disposal problem -- without its toxic components, a lithium-ion battery could be thrown away.

Best of all, purpurin also turns out to be a no-fuss ingredient. "In the literature there are one or two other natural organic molecules in development for batteries, but the process to make them is much more tedious and complicated," noted Professor John.

Made and stored at room temperature, the purpurin electrode is made in just a few easy steps: dissolve the purpurin in an alcohol solvent and add lithium salt. When the salt's lithium ion binds with purpurin the solution turns from reddish yellow to pink. "The chemistry is quite simple," coauthor and City College postdoctoral researcher Dr. Subbiah Nagarajan explained.

The team estimates that a commercial green Li-ion battery may be only a few years away, counting the time needed to ramp up purpurin's efficiency or hunt down and synthesize similar molecules. "We can say it is definitely going to happen, and sometime soon, because in this case we are fully aware of the mechanism," said Professor John.

"When you can generate something new or unheard of, you think of chemistry in a different way," he added. "That a natural material or dye can be used for a battery, that is exciting, even for me."

UK chooses doctor as new head of NICE

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's health ministry named a former practising doctor, David Haslam, as the preferred candidate to chair the country's healthcare cost-effectiveness watchdog NICE on Monday.

Haslam will take over as chairman of the renamed National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) from Michael Rawlins, assuming he passes scrutiny by a committee of MPs.

Rawlins, who has chaired NICE since its creation in 1999, is due to step down in March 2013.

During his time at the helm of the agency, Rawlins has made NICE a powerful force in the pharmaceutical industry with its hard-nosed approach to deciding whether or not pricey new drugs should be used on the state health service.

Haslam, who already leads the NICE Evidence Accreditation Advisory Board, is the immediate past president of the British Medical Association.

NICE will change its official title from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence next year.

US trade deficit grows to $42.2 billion in October

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. trade deficit increased in October because exports fell by a larger margin than imports, a sign that slower global growth could weigh on the U.S. economy.

The Commerce Department said Tuesday that the trade deficit grew 4.8 percent in October from September to $42.2 billion.

Exports dropped 3.6 percent to $180.5 billion. Sales of commercial aircraft, autos and farm products all declined.

Imports fell 2.1 percent to $222.8 billion, reflecting fewer shipments of cell phones, autos and machinery.

The trade gap with China also increased to a record high, which will keep pressure on the Obama administration. Manufacturers and U.S. lawmakers have complained about China's use of unfair trade practices.

Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said the decline in both exports and imports likely reflected some disruptions from Superstorm Sandy. The storm closed ports in the Northeast for the last few days of October. Exports should rebound in November, although Dales expects the longer-run trend to stay negative.

"The bigger issue is that the weak global economy has been taking its toll on exports," Dales said, predicting that trade would drag slightly on overall U.S. growth in 2013.

A wider trade deficit acts as a drag on U.S. growth. It typically means the U.S. is earning less on overseas sales of American-produced goods while spending more on foreign products.

Exports rose to a record high in September, which helped lift economic growth in the July-September quarter to annual rate 2.7 percent. That more than doubled the 1.3 percent annual growth rate in the April-June quarter. Growth during the summer quarter was also helped by stronger rebuilding of business stockpiles than previously estimated.

Most economists say growth is slowing in the current October-December quarter to below 2 percent. One reason for the weaker growth is the decline in exports. And U.S. companies are probably cutting back on restocking, mostly because of worries about looming tax increases and government spending cuts that will kick in next year without a budget deal before January.

There were some hopeful signs in the report.

U.S. exports to the 27-nation European Union rose 1.4 percent in October. Exports to that region have fallen 0.7 percent from January through October because the debt crisis has pushed many European nations into recession.

The U.S. also ran a record $2.6 billion trade surplus in October with the nations of South and Central America. The surplus with Brazil, the largest economy in South America, was $1.8 billion. U.S. exports to that country hit a record $4.1 billion.

Still, the U.S. trade deficit with China kept growing in October to a record $29.5 billion.

American manufacturers say China has kept the yuan undervalued against the U.S. dollar. A lower valued yuan makes Chinese goods cheaper for U.S. consumers and American products more expensive in China.

The Obama administration has lobbied China to move more quickly to allow the yuan to rise in value. But it has refused to cite China as a currency manipulator. That designation would require negotiations between the two nations and could lead to the United States filing a trade case against China before the World Trade Organization.

Students making plans to head home for the holidays | The Tangerine

With the holiday break approaching, students are making arrangements to head back home to spend the holidays with their families. However, some still have no idea what to do during their break. Some students are going to travel, visit friends and family and, some are going to stay in Utica.

Sophomore Nikolette LaZore a health studies/ PT major is excited to go home and has made several plans for the break.

?I?m very excited for break to have a rest with all of the school work that I have been doing,? LaZore said. ?I am just planning on having a nice relaxing break before the second semester starts up.?

A few of LaZore?s plans are to work during the break and to hang out with some friends.

?I plan on working at my job at Macy?s for a majority of break because it gets crazy in there the weeks before Christmas,? LaZore said. ?I also plan on hanging out with my friends who will be coming home for break from college.?

Something exciting LaZore plans to do is learn to snowboard.

?I would like to learn to snowboard this year; I have always wanted to and put off learning every year.?

Madison Bayer, a sophomore majoring in nursing, has a great plan for her winter break, which includes her 21st birthday.

?This winter break, I?m going home to Long Island and hanging out with my friends and family,? Bayer said.

Things do not end there for Bayer.

?For New Year?s, my friends and I are going to Atlantic City for my 21st birthday. It should be a lot of fun and I?m very excited for the trip,? Bayer said.

Senior Alex Titus, a criminal justice major, does not have a concrete plan of what his break will consist of.

?Right now I have no concrete plan for traveling yet, but I?m just going to spend much time with family,? Titus said.

However, Titus is going to make time for relaxation.

?I plan to go home and catch up on some much needed sleep and also spend some time with family and friends as well as hanging out in the city because I?m from Long Island,? Titus said.

Sophomore Courtney May, a cyber-security major, is planning to take a family vacation.

?As a family, we are going to Colorado to spend Christmas there because my sister is there, so we?ll go to visit her and we?ll be together as a family,? May said.

However, May?s vacation will be cut short when she has to return to Utica College.

?I have to be back at school actually on the 29th because I play hockey and we have a game on the second, so I guess my break will be spent here in Utica,? May said.

Sophomore Justine Gordon, who majors in biology and has a concentration in pre-med, will have an interesting winter break. She is going to spend her winter break doing some volunteer job in a hospital.

?During the winter break, I?ll be working and volunteering at New York Presbyterian Hospital because I want to be a doctor,? Gordon said. ?I used to volunteer there all through high school for about two years [?] so I?m gonna volunteer there and I work at Toys ?R? Us,? Gordon said.

Junior Richard Tehan, a chemistry major, plans to make time for both research and family during the Christmas break.

?I?m going to be doing some research about biochemistry,? Tehan said. ?I?m going to celebrate Christmas with my family of course.?

Some students like senior Iman Humes, a major in government and politics, will go to visit family out of the country. Iman is going to travel to visit her family in Central America.

?I?m going to Belize,? Humes said. ?I?m going to spend time with old friends and family there.?

While it is not an issue for students who live in the city or other states to get home, some people are wondering what international students are doing during the break.

Some international students have made arrangements to head back home to their countries to spend time with family before the spring semester rolls around, while others plan to use this time to tour the states.

Sophomore Abdullah Alrobian plans to go back home to Saudi Arabia for the holiday break for relaxation.

?I plan to hang out with the family? and go to the dessert and go out with my friends to play soccer,? Alrobian said.

Alrobian is looking forward to heading home however he has a long trip ahead of him.? There are four lay overs on his flight to get home.

?My flight took four stops to get home. From Syracuse, to New York City, to Stompol, to Riau then I drive to my city,? Alorbian said.

For Junior Ngoc Le it takes her 25 hours to get back home to Vietnam. However, she is still excited and when she lands, she plans to relax and visit her family.

?I plan to hang around with my family and then visit somewhere that I did not go to yet,? Le said.

Sophomore Tuuli Vanhanen also plans to go back home for the break to Finland, but she is not sure if she will return to UC.

?I don?t know if I?m coming back,? Vanhanen said.

Like her peers, Vanhanen plans to visit her friends and relatives during the break and also go skiing and clubbing.

Writing Software from the Technologically Impaired - The Fictorian Era

Yes, from the technologically impaired, not for the technologically impaired, so I can?t help you with your computer problems. And, I?m not saying that whoever wrote the software was technologically impaired, only the person writing this post. So, if you?re like me, and don?t consider yourself particularly savvy with computers and software, why use a writing program? Because it will make you a better writer.

Here are my experiences with a couple of programs out there:

Snowflake:

This is a great organizational tool that takes you step by step through writing a well-developed novel. It?s also a great help as you try to figure out those synopses. It starts you with a brief paragraph description of your novel then has you expand the book summary into five plot-point paragraphs. That expansion continues until you end up at a page where you write out the key points for individual scenes. It also has a character page with a multitude of questions to help develop your characters? personalities and quirks. I used the software for about eight months, and though I found it helpful, I felt like I was moving back and forth from one screen to another and it didn?t seem to make my writing much easier than having multiple files in Word. Scrivener:

I use a pc and had heard about scrivener from mac users for years. When scrivener came out with a pc version I had to try it. There?s a learning curve and I still haven?t figured out how to do maximize the program?s capabilities. But if you buy this, I highly suggest you take the time to go through the tutorial, probably more than once. This, and updated versions, will probably be my writing program for life. I don?t have to go into files or bounce back and forth between screens. My color-coded outline runs along the left side of my screen, including a section for research, characters, places, or anything else I might want. Along the right side of my screen I can choose to see notes related to specific files, including pictures and alternating notes pertaining to my whole novel, or just the chapter I?m working on. My writing screen itself can be split, so I can be writing in one screen, need information from one of my research files, and open up another screen right next to where I?m writing. ?The only time I have to leave the program is when I go to the internet or books to do research, but when I find what I need, I can place files into my scrivener program and have them on hand for later use. ?The only drawback so far is that the spell-check/auto-correct doesn?t seem to be as good as Word, and when I?m working without an internet connection I don?t have any type of dictionary or thesaurus. Since I rarely write under those circumstances, and when I do I just put in a triple-x and move on, I don?t find this a difficulty. I highly recommend this program. Dragon Naturally Speaking:

I like typing and haven?t used this yet, though I hear great things. I?d probably be a lot thinner if I took this hiking instead of sitting on my butt at a keyboard. If you can learn to tell a story this way, or if you prefer telling your stories rather than the slower process of typing, this might be the software for you. Since I don?t actually use it, I?m going to quote my friend, Dale Stinson, on its many uses and advantages:

?Seven years ago, I decided to write a science-fiction novel. One big problem, I never learned to type. When I tried to type something down, the thought evaporated as I was concentrating on the letters on the keyboard. The next day, I bought Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 4. Initial training of the software took over an hour. During the first eight hours of use, dictation accuracy increased from 85% to almost 95%. Two years later, I purchased DNS- 7 Preferred which came bundled with a digital voice recorder. Theoretically, you could dictate into the recorder, plug it into your computer and magically have your dictation transcribed. It was a huge disappointment, I was lucky if I achieved 75% accuracy. BUT, dictating directly to the computer was a vast improvement over version 4. Within the first day of use, I?d achieved 98% accuracy most of the time. Two years ago I upgraded to DNS-10 Preferred. It was literally a quantum leap forward in usability. I regularly achieve 99% + accuracy with a new software.

PROS: Editing has been made easier by having the software read what I?ve written in a computer voice while I follow the written words on the screen. When I hear the voice say something that doesn?t sound right, I can make a correction while it continues reading. It?s very easy to put down a tremendous number of words during a four-hour writing session, speaking stream of consciousness can do that.

CONS: The software never misspells a word, but it often misunderstands a word. For example: Names. There are many names that can be spelled different ways. Kathy and Cathy are an example. I?ve tried using the name I preferred, ?Cathy? multiple times on the same page. Sometimes it would come up Cathy other times it would come up Kathy. After correcting by voice two or three times, it continued making the same mistake. The software also tries to guess what you?re trying to say, it?s often wrong.

In seven years, I?ve ?written? close to 3 million words using Voice Recognition Technology. Without it, I would?ve never been able to start writing.? You can learn more about it here:?http://www.nuance.com/dragon/index.htm

Editing Software:

There are also editing programs available. I?ve tried a few of these, but since I write science fiction and fantasy, usually using a lot of made-up words, I find most of these more tedious than helpful. I?ve heard great things though. Court dismisses Verizon attempt to halt FCC data roaming requirements

Court tosses Verizon claims FCC couldn't require data roaming deals

Verizon hasn't been fond of the FCC requiring data roaming agreements; it sued the agency last May on claims that the requirement overstepped the FCC's legal bounds. The DC Circuit Court of Appeals isn't quite so worried, as three judges at the court have unanimously ruled that the FCC was within the authority of the Communication Act to make data roaming deals mandatory. Regulators have been measured in developing the rule and aren't treating cellular networks like Verizon's as common carriers, the court says. Verizon hasn't yet commented on the court loss, although FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is more than pleased -- he sees the roaming rule encouraging competition and keeping more of our mobile gear online. We're sure smaller carriers would tend to agree now that they won't always have to build out wide-reaching (and expensive) cellular coverage of their own just to offer more than voice and texting for travelers.
